City
of Liverpool, 74 Circle
|
 |
The City of Liverpool Circle was inaugurated on
17th October 1923. In March 1997 we held our 800th meeting in the magnificent
surroundings of the Liverpool Town Hall, and in October 1998 we celebrated our
75th anniversary. (See Recent Events). Our 900th was held in September 2005.
The Circle meets on the second Thursday of every
month except August, and we hold an annual joint meeting in January with Liverpool
4 Circle.
The Circle Brothers are frequent visitors to other
Circles in Province and elsewhere, and our dinner Secretary ( and a past President
of at least 3 Circles), Brother Stephen Wright, is well known in Province 1
and 4 for his visiting. Indeed Province presented him with a small trophy in
recognition of his visiting record ! Our current President, Brother Wilf Grogan
is a true Liverpudlian & enjoys visiting.
- Meetings
: Second Thursday of every month, at the luxurious West Lancashire Golf Club,
Hall Road West, Blundellsands, Liverpool. L23 8SZ. (Hall Road station on the
main Liverpool to Southport railway). Registers open at 7pm for the meeting
at 7.30pm. The telephone number of the Club is 0151 924 1076, but this is
for emergencies only. To book in for a meeting, please telephone the Dinner
Secretary, Stephen Wright, no later than the Monday prior to the meeting date.
You can contact him on : Tel : 0151 678 5336. or the President, Paul Breen
by e-mail on :catena74@blueyonder.co.uk .
Dinner follows the meeting. This is usually a full 3 course meal plus coffee
& mints. It is usually priced at the excellent value of between £13
& £16 per head (depending upon the chosen menu), including a £1
raffle for a bottle of whisky, as long as the Treasurer remembers to bring
it with him ! The raffle is for the current President's Charity. Lounge suites
are standard, unless it is a special function. There is a very extensive wine
list, from the affordable to the very expensive !
- Joint Meetings
: We usually hold at least one of these each year. In January we share a joint
meeting with Liverpool 4, and then a Ladies night as below. Both are always
well attended, and excellent social events.
- Ladies Night
: Like most Circles, we were finding it financially difficult to hold an independant
Ladies Night, so we have joined forces with Liverpool 4 and South Liverpool
164 to hold a joint Ladies Night, which is now a regular event in the Provincial
calendar, with most years seeing over 250 Brothers and their Ladies enjoyed
a most successful evening at the end of April, in the splendour of the grand
ballroom of the Britannia Adelphi Hotel. This is always a black tie event,
and we usually have both a disco & a live band. Our Circle widows are
always invited to this occasion. See our calendar
of events for this years date.
- Post Circle Ladies
: We also invite the Ladies to dine with us post-Circle on at least three
occasions each year, but always for the December meeting so as to make a Christmas
party event.
- In Memorium
: Every November, Province 4 holds an Annual Mass for the deceased members
of the Circles in Province. In 2009 it was held at SFX in Liverpool on November
1st.
Below we list the Brothers of the Circle who have
died. We also include those deceased Brothers of Waterloo Circle. That Circle
closed in late 1998, and our present membership includes a number from that
Circle.
